Dry skin or dehydrated skin, surely they are the same thing?

You know the feeling. Your skin feels tight, looks dull, and no cream seems to be enough. So you buy a heavier, richer one, and a week later you are back where you started.

The problem is usually that you are treating the wrong thing. Dry skin and dehydrated skin look almost identical on the surface, but they are two different conditions, and the fix for one can make the other worse.

Dry skin is a skin type

Dry skin is about oil, the fats your skin makes on its own. If your skin is dry, you naturally produce less of it than average, and that is genetic. You were born with it and you will have it for life, though it shifts a little with the seasons and with age.

Dry skin needs oil. Facial oils, balms, richer creams, ingredients like ceramides and squalane that top up the oil you do not make enough of yourself.

    Dehydrated skin is a condition

Dehydrated skin is about water, not oil. It is temporary, and it can happen to anyone, whatever their skin type. Even very oily skin gets dehydrated after too much sun, cold weather, harsh cleansing, a long flight or too much exfoliation.

Dehydrated skin needs water, not necessarily oil. Hyaluronic acid, glycerin and panthenol pull water in and hold it there.

    Why the difference matters

If you have oily skin that has become dehydrated and you reach for a heavy cream meant for dry skin, you can end up dehydrated AND congested at the same time. If you have genuinely dry skin and you only use a hydrating serum without sealing it in, the water leaves again and the tight feeling is back within hours.

The simple test: if your skin feels tight and looks dull straight out of the shower, before you have put anything on it, that points to dry skin as your type. If the tightness turned up suddenly after something specific, a sunny weekend, a flight, a stretch of heavy exfoliating, dehydration is more likely.

The routine that works for both

Build it in layers. Hydration first, hyaluronic acid or a water based serum, onto slightly damp skin. Then the oil on top to lock it in. If dry is your skin type you need to do this every day. If you are just having a dehydrated spell, a few days of extra focus on water is usually enough to bring it back.
